Ironwood

(Ostrya virginiana)

This rugged, slow-growing tree is a great choice for a small space. It is not tolerant of road salt, so it’s best not to plant it near paved areas where salt is applied. It does well in a broad variety of soil types and is quite drought-tolerant. Many specimens retain their leaves in winter, creating additional privacy for your space. Ironwoods produce dense, strong wood and generally have excellent structure. The hoplike fruits add visual interest, and the leaves turn a brilliant, luminous yellow in the fall.
