Pin Oak
(Quercus palustris)
The Pin Oak is a fast-growing, rugged tree that tolerates wet environments and the soil compaction that is characteristic to the urban landscape. It forms relatively good structure when young but benefits from some structural pruning in its early years. It grows best in moderately acidic soil. Pin oaks have a more compact and upright structure than many other oaks, making them a good choice for a slightly smaller space. Their acorns provide important forage for wildlife. In the fall, their leaves turn brilliant shades of red and bronze. Pin oaks tend to retain their leaves well into the winter, making them useful if you are looking to establish year-round privacy screening.
